Expansion Shuckers in Position for First Round Playoff Bye with Three Games Remaining

Severn, MD (March 8, 2012) – With just three regular season games remaining in their inaugural Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League (ACPBL) season the Bay Area Shuckers (5-6) are right where they want to be. With their 124-114 win over the Toms River Shooters (3-7) on Sunday they are currently in position to gain a coveted first round bye in the ACPBL playoffs, they have faced perhaps the league’s most challenging schedule, and a recent surge of injuries and player absences have forced reserves into starring roles.

To hold a potential bye in the playoffs they still must battle through several challenging games left on the schedule, starting with this weekend’s match-up Saturday night at home against the Beltway Bombers (6-3). Led by the reigning ACPBL Most Valuable Player, Hugh “Baby Shaq” Jones, the Bombers have defeated the Shuckers four out of five times this season. In trying to earn their second win against the Bombers, the Shuckers have a simple game plan.

“We will work hard to contain Jones, their leading scorer, and defend the paint as a team.  We will move the ball on offense to find the best chance to attack the rim,” said Shuckers Head Coach Bob Topp.

A win against the Bombers puts the Shuckers closer to their goal of earning a first round bye in the playoffs. A loss leaves them battling for playoff position with just two regular season games left. Following the game this Saturday against the Bombers, the Shuckers have their final home game of the season on March 24th against the Manhattan Pride (1-9), a team Bay Area defeated 131-108 earlier this season. They then travel to Philadelphia on April 14th to take on Palmieri Jeans (8-1), the league leaders, but also a team the Shuckers have defeated.

Few will say the Shuckers aren’t ready come playoff time. Only three of the Shuckers 11 games have come against teams with a losing record and their opponents have a combined 61-42 mark. In addition to the tough schedule the Shuckers have also experienced a recent spate of player losses, resulting in reserves stepping into starter roles and five player signings last week. Coach Topp does not see this as a roadblock, however.

“We have played a very challenging schedule.  Two of the best records in the league are found in our division, but we have beaten both of those teams.  We are being battle tested to prepare to surprise some teams that have not seen us when it comes to playoff time.  Our depth has passed that test recently, with two reserves, Zac White and Harvey Paige coming off season-high performances on Sunday,” noted Topp.

After nearly a full season of games, the Shuckers and their players have shaken the new tag. Now with just three regular season games left and the ACPBL playoff looming, the Shuckers will now find out if a new tag such as title contender or champion awaits them.

The Shuckers home games take place at the Kilby Center located on the campus of Annapolis Area Christian School at 109 Burns Crossing Road in Severn. Their game against the Beltway Bombers on Saturday, March 10th is set for a Tip off time of 7:00 PM.
